its a sign of the times that a big beast such as square enix are turning to epic. perhaps the days when one company does everything on a title from begining to end are over. probably a good thing if it cuts develpoment times and helps design implementation.

 Does this mean a sequel to FF7 spin off Dirge of Cerberus using a decent game engine?

I have been thinking recently that it is probably in the gaming industries best interest to have 3 parties involved in a game. These would be the publishers, game developers and engine developers.

So even Square want to go for the option of getting FF games to work on PS3 and 360 as quick and easily as possible! Maybe they're thinking they need to do them on PS3 for JPN, and 360 rest of the world!
