Who actually cares about Halo’s story?

Postby CVG Gav » 22 Nov 2006, 17:22

Guys (and girl), we're putting together a piece about the story of Halo and whether or not you lot actually care about the story or just love shooting each other online.

Let us know below.

The story didn't do much for me. Yes I'm eager to find out what happens to the Master Chief after the ending of Halo 2 (which was rubbish), but gameplay is ten times more important. I don't buy a game for the story, I buy it to play and have fun. By all means have a plot, but a simple one.

I think that stories are important for games. Gone are the days where a sprite represents your character. Games these days are longer and more cinematic, and anything cinematic needs a good storyline or the illusion is broken.

I like HALO 2's story (it was much more present than in HALO 1), and it kept me playing, as often happens. If I get to a tedious bit, the chances are that if I'm not interested in what happens next, I simply won't play it.

A decent story counts for a lot, so I hope to see a greater investment in this in the future of the HALO series.
I remember when all these fields were blue.

I think the actual concept behind Halo is brilliant, the whole ring planet thing that is actually a weapon, but it is very clumsily told, and the fact that i can't even remember what happened in Halo 2 pretty much sums it up.

There are many many better examples of well told stories in gaming land.

The potential was there but it's a bit of a missed opportunity.

I agree, but more from the perspective that a great story offers great scenarios for us to play through. Nothing drives me more insane than when you have a game that has great story sections but only shows you them as video clips, meaning you can do nothing more than sit there as the narrative progress' by itself. IMO if a developer isn't going to spend the time to make major plot points playable in-game (even if you can't actually effect them in any real way) then I'd rather have no story at all and just loads and loads of mindless action.

As for Halo itself I can't really say much as I've only played the first one and that had all the effect on me as water on glass.

I quite like the Halo storyline, but the characters in it individually are very poor with no depth. However they produced utter disappointment with the end of Halo 2 being no reward and their blatant lies with the "Earth Will Never Be the Same" tagline - that suggests something major will happen on Earth, or will happen to Earth, or at least you spend the majority of the game on Earth but none of those occured.

Halo 2 was merely a good game, but whilst playing the Earth levels I thought it was a great game.

But I'm not too bothered by the expanded universe or the spin-off games really - do Halo 3 and end it there.

pornos and video games are about the same as far as story lines. It helps to give a minor illusion that there is something going on besides the action, but really there's nothing to most of it.

Halo was interesting in a way. The ringed planet, the war with aliens that turns into a 3-way war with the Hoarde, the machine that is guiding you, but who wants you destroyed along with the hoarde.

Halo 2, now what happened again? I remember the aliens invading, a sky bridge across the water, and some fight with some guy who was trying to take over the world.

Better than most, but it needs to come a long way.

Am i the only one who senses a significant plot similarity (at least at the basic level) between Halo and Freespace? Frankly, i prefer Freespace's universe than Halo's one.

Yes, i do care about the plot as most of my games i play single player. I do have live but i only really play either racers or football games online. With regards to shooters, platformers etc... i'm a single player whore. And developers better satisfy me. Stop me if i'm sounding a bit sleazy.

Anyway, with regards to plotline importance, Black is a great example of little plot being plenty.
I'm kind of a big deal...

You`re all being stupid. Obviously you love the story or you wouldnt be playing the game. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing the aliens have annahilated our race, having a full on skirmish with marines vs covenant and coming out on top of that small yet pyschologically large battle.
I gaurantee if it wasnt earth in a foreseeable future (the only real scifi is the faster than light travel), you wouldnt be as engaged. It`d just be another shooting game, may aswell be metroid prime or somehting.

I enjoy the story, and play each section to get to the next cutscene to find out more about the story and characters.
If u dont, well u can just suck my balls.

Actually now that you mention it I do see it. I also prefer Freespace but that may be down to the fact I've always loved the genre it sits in.

That really depends on the game, most RPG's etc have quite deep story lines. The Halo story however fits into that definition.

You're a spastic. The only time I ever played the campaign in the last two years was when my internet connection went down for a day and there was f**k all else to do. Halo:CE's story bored me, hence my lack of interest for halo2's campaign. If they decided to make 3 a multiplayer only game, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

While it has been a long time since i played Halo ( aint played Halo 2 really), I though the story was believable and enjoyable. While not making playing the game any better. I did enjoy watching it unfold.

It wont win any awards, but then most video games storylines are pretty average and seldom rise to the good marker.

Gameplay over storyline any day.

Tho I seem to recall loving Advent Rising storyline and gameplay :|
