fake. its got to be. surely the bolt would arc to the metal container rather than a basketball hoop backboard which would probably be made of plastic or wood. surely he wouldn't have any control of where the bolt would go

Its going to the metal hoop isnt it? im guessing the whole things acts like a lightening rod, pathe of least resistance and what not.

Then again I wouldnt have a clue if im honest!
I'm a PC gamer and don't really care about the console war as i am far above you, so far infact that you'll probably take this signature seriously.

He actually explains in his website, the link CVG gave :? , under the heading 'special effects' - that he creates the illusion of a flowing continuous spark by using some camera trickery.
