Ubisoft Montreal CEO thinks 'audience is ready for always on

Postby DAEDALUS79 » 16 Apr 2013, 11:28

Ubisoft are one of the worst companies in the market at the moment, always online from them will just be another reason to not buy their crap.

Ubisoft Montreal CEO thinks 'audience is ready for always on

Postby SupaNeo » 16 Apr 2013, 11:39

How many more times will this concept be proposed and subsequently panned before the notion wears off?

An always-on connection for gaming hardware is a terrible idea. Just because a system can be connected to the internet does not mean it should operate exclusively so. That being said, unless a game or software physically needs to be connected at all times to actually operate, the notion is justified (online-only multiplayer games for instance). What is not justified is having such a requirement for games with isolated single-player gamemodes, even if they include an online multiplayer mode.

Games have always had offline and online components to be accessible to everyone (apart from the aforementioned online-only multiplayer games), so why only settle for one and cut-off the other people?

Who the hell is that? The Amish? I would say anyone who doesn't have the internet and doesn't want it are not really a large console buying demographic.

I think Ubisoft should put their money where their mouth is and make all versions of Ass Creed BF, Splinter, Rayman, Watch_Dogs all require a constant internet connection.

We're all ready so they've got nothing to lose.

I agree with him that it's a concept that needs to be sold as a benefit, but the fact that it hasn't been so far completely invalidates his point about the audience being ready.

As I've said before, "always on" is a far bigger marketing concern than an operational one because while such a requirement shouldn't cause a much of an issue for the majority, they don't seem to be able to give us a reason to want it in the first place and they are fighting a lot of stigma thanks to Blizzard and EA making a complete pig's ear of the concept so far.

Does 'Always online' mean 'Always online' ie Option 1?

1) You need to be connected to the internet/network to be able to use your machine/software <---- That version sucks

2) You need to be connected to the internet/network to be able to use advanced/extra functions of your machine/software (but games/dvds etc will still play) <---- Please let it be this version

For the love of the baby jesus I hope that Option 2 prevails... There's going to be huge consumer backlash if you can't play or access games you've bought when you're offline.

Xbox Live has just been experiencing issues and it surely highlights why Option 1 in the real world sucks.

And is that what they mean by always online or not?
Some say he's half man, half fish. Others say its more of a 70/30 split. Whatever the percentage, he's one fishy bastard.
