Steam 'Early Access' lets you play games still in developmen

Postby turricantg » 20 Mar 2013, 20:45

I hate Steam......

I woke up really early the other day after a hard days Far Cry 3 session trying to find those pesky relics.

I put the kettle on to make a nice cup of tea, as I reached to get some choccy biccys, I lent over the spout and burnt my arm from the steam.

Haha! I haven't played PC games in years but I *still* immediately checked that list for Half Life 3. I've NEVER played any Half Life!

I'm a lot more interested in playing the hundreds (thousands?) of games that never got out of development over the years, and early builds of games we know now (like Duke Nukem Forever), looking at old Half-Life Alpha/Beta videos on youtube is really interesting, looks more like a Quake mod than the game that was finally released.

Haven't all games of the last 5 years still effectively being in development when we start playing them :P ?

This doesn't sound like anything new. I have being quite impressed with the likes of Project CARS and Arma 3 where the community can actually help steer a game by reporting bugs, giving recommendations and feedback.

I almost added BF3 to that list although I think the beta release was really an attempt to keep the fans quiet and extend the development time. Development was always 2 or 3 builds ahead of any beta build.

What an ingenious brilliant idea to hire testers for free and make them pay you instead of you paying them

Was just looking at them and seeing their value for a game to look at and to be fair if you like the ARMA series it's prob not a bad idea - its £19.99 and you get to play/test the game in both Alpha and Beta then get a copy of the complete game when it's released (which i'm guessing will be £29.99 or more when its officially launched).

While i'll agree it wont be for everyone who may think of it as just paying the dev's to test the game as long as the developers do take on your feedback and make changes if a vast majority of people taking part in the testing say it needs changing and you get a full copy free when its released i dont see the problem.
