SimCity review: Addictive, beautiful but broken

Server problems are only the tip of the iceberg in this disappointing reboot of the classic city sim

This has been one of the worst video game launches of all time. Players have lost their cities, found themselves in hour-long queues, or not been able to play the game at all, days after release. Maxis and EA's reputations have been damaged, and the already vilified concept of online DRM is now more widely despised than ever. It's been a disaster.... read more

as everything is stored on the cloud.

No one elses cloud only works if you are connected to the right server.

Saying the saves are stored on the cloud gives a false impression, imo.

Yeah, you're right. I just clarified this in the text. Cheers.

Looks gorgeous but they've made so many insane decisions  . It's not even funny, it's just pathetic.

So after all the server issues you are telling me the game isn't actually good beyond a couple of hours? What a shame

I've literally not had a city for more than a day. A lot of the 'end game stuff' for lack of a better phrase, is bugged and doesn't work. Things like the specializations, casinos in particular where they even came out and said all but the starting gambling structure don't work properly.
The cities are indeed far too small, and far too easy to max out whilst your demand levels go crazy. They're also inconsistent, such as huge demand for industry, and yet i have factories closing because there's not enough workers?
The worst of all was the latest city I built, I managed 3 in-game days, built a nice little circular town, still all low wealth, stuck some industry down one side of the map with the wind blowing away and my sims started dropping like flies. Turned out I had absolutely crap loads of air pollution blowing in from residential side, this was on a private region with no other cities in the region, the pollution literally came from nowhere and when I say it was bad, I mean bad. I can't find a single thing in this game that works properly if i'm honest, just a lot of it isn't noticeable unless you pay closer attention, or until your city is massive.
People can rant at EA all they want, whilst they offer bum-love to the developer maxis. Well quite frankly, they've done a pretty shite job too. Considering the architecture for this game was already there in simcity 4, and making it prettier isn't really hard, it's shocking that it's as bad as it is.

3000 is still the best / most fun Sim City game IMO (though 4 is more accomplished with features).

I believe 3000 to be the most Polished SIm city game

I often get graphical bugs in Sim city 4 (weird cars glitching out, or roads disappearing)

Sim city 4 runs better on my old windows Xp machine than my win 7 gaming PC. But thats likely a compatibility thing.

3000 runs fine on both tho!

I am defo gonna pick up sim city 5 when it lowers in price.

I just hope EA release an offline mode BEFORE they shut off the servers when the game ends its lifecycle. Thats the trouble with these cloud games, once the servers go, the game is dead.

Seems the words reboot and EA, in the same article, spells disaster. Unfortunately a disaster which you can't turn off and on, unlike in this game.

wow, see i thought it was just internet trolls saying things like "EA are systematically destroying all of their IPs".

clearly not.

i'm totally unsurprised that their choices have ruined this franchise. i still have sim city 4 on my laptop and it gets played every now and then even now. i wouldn't buy the new sim city because i know i wont be able to do the same with that in a few years time, cuz the servers will be switched off.
