PS4 games to cost '$0.99-$60' - Tretton

Postby Shadmeister » 22 Feb 2013, 21:08

Hi,

I would expect no rise in costs - since this is a near PC architecture - the difficulty in programming should be reduced compared to the PS3.

Possible that future enhancements such as virtual glasses for gameplay may increase the cost of that particular game.

Regards,

Shademeister.

PS4 games to cost '$0.99-$60' - Tretton

Something strange going on.

Games the same price? Brand new hyper console costing just £300-£400? I think I'm safe in assuming that development costs haven't reduced even if it's debatable whether they've gone up so that means the biggest games will still need to sell y million (where y is a number greater than one) to recoup costs. I can count on my very own two hands the franchises that do that (not including Nintendo franchises as they don't apply here).

Next gen games will cost up to £60 defo. It's not something I'd pay into, which is why most of the games I play are used and most of them I get rid of. But I can remember games costing £60 when the Nintendo 64 was on the go, even import Mega Drive games. And with DLC, it's going to get even more expensive. Can't see Wii U games costing over £40. But Wii U games costing the same as 3DS games is laughable. As I've said in other posts, there's going to be a gaming crash, more so with the cost of next gen consoles and games. The Vita and Wii U hasn't exactly set next gen alight.

Me4PD I'd be worried if the prices don't go up. Our PC friends often complain that the more advanced PC tech isn't being put to good use. They've largely embraced the PS4 as it will encourage the devs to get the best out of both machines. This, as Daz says, means more staff, initially at least. If they can produce the goods at the same old prices then there is the worry they'll cut corners which, guffaw, means it was laziness not consoles that held back PC spreadsheet gaming all along.

The same topic comes up every new gen, will games rise? The answer is likely to be no. Games have held a steady price over the last two decades (3 generations,) and giving account to inflation are actually getting cheaper to buy. Games might be costing more to make, but the market is growing in proportion to that cost. PS4/720 games will, I feel, carry a RRP of £50, with the actual selling price being closer to £40

My parents paid £80 for Blaster Master on the NES when that came out, so there have always been expensive games.
I think games prices can be a double edged sword sometimes, if it's too expensive people will just wait until it goes down or seek alternatives, but if they're too low people may question the quality and go for a AAA title.

Perhaps they just mean that their own first party games won't be jumping up in price, but it's up to other publishers how much they want to charge, but hopefully they'll start trying to attract PC gamers with prices between £20 and £35.

I'm more likely to pay for a full retail game that costs £30+ than I am a £2 mobile game. In my opinion, they should bring the rrps down to PC game level, they could attract some of that crowd that way (I don't know why console games cost like £10 more anyway).

Maybe after a year they'll cost $60/£40. As for release year you can bet your life on it they'll charge in excess of £50.

$0.99-$60 eh? Knowing how game prices are exchanged overseas, I'd guess that that translates to £0.99-£60 in the UK.

Don't games always go up in price a bit for the first year or so of a new consoles life before falling back to the price they are now?

The truth is that games will only become more complex, especially now that the next-gen consoles have the horsepower for their own physics, lighting, collision engines etc etc. Teams for the most popular games will only get bigger.

Realistically, the RRP is only going to go up imo.

Not really. There are more gamers than ever before meaning there is no need for price rises.

Hopefully as technology gets better and more expensive it totally kills the shovelware games.

Even if there are more 'gamers' Sony's dropped theirs by a third with the PS3. They don't get a share of what Nintendo and Microsoft picked up.
