PS4 supports 4K, but not for games

Postby crimbo » 21 Feb 2013, 18:21

Because the new xbox will support 4k right? don't make me laugh. The ps4 has 8gb of ddr5 ram, that puts it up there with 1000-2000 grand computers.

It makes sense when you think about it. No one will own such a TV capable of such extreme HD for a few years unless they are millionaires or bankers. There isn't even a market for the sort of films really but its inclusion for entertainment makes it a little preparation for the day it comes.
Childhood pictures redeem, clean and so serene
See myself without ruining lines
Whole days throwing sticks into streams

I have crawled so far sideways
I recognise dim traces of creation

At least they're being honest from the start this time and not making outrageous claims that never come to fruition. I'm liking Sony's attitude to the marketing of the ps4. They have looked at a few home truths with regard to the ps3 launch and are better off for it.

 Shared system memory, not discounting the OS imprint (that will be larger than 512mb now I wager). The games will need to load a lot more data in loaded to Ram to run off optical media. Coupled with slower than 1000-2000 grand PC graphics card memory bandwidth.

Not to mention until most gaming PC's average V-Ram goes up, cross platform games will likely not make use off all the extra Ram headroom. With a processor core what is meant to go up against the Intel Atom line, and a GPU that is approximately half the power of AMD's HD 7970. Yes I do believe The PS4 is right up there with 1000 grand PC  Yet alone a two grand one.

4k gaming = PC
1080p gaming = PC & "next gen"

I said this right back when it was rumoured to support 4k. Intelligence would tell you there's no way in all of grand hell games would run at that resolution... at least not at playable framerates (unless they were arcade titles). Even PCs with far higher specs wouldn't be able to handle it, unless you threw in a couple of GTX Titans.

8Gb of RAM is pretty standard on PC's (and totally not needed for gaming currently, unless you're looking at Crysis 3 maxed; in which case you probably have double that amount anyway). 8 GDDR5 RAM is not standard, but even then, it'll be shared on the PS3.

LOL. 8gb of ram costs on average £40, all be it DDR3. The PS3 GPU is around about an overclocked AMD 7850 (£120), and the AMD Jaguar based 8 core CPU was meant for low end laptops and tablets... Just saying.

I was curious about this too... I don't recall anyone in the conference stating "1080p @ 60fps" which I'm sure they would have IF it was the case... :(

Because resolution and frame rate is set by individual game developers. If they want 1080p, frame rate may suffer, if they want a constant 60fps then they may lower the resolution to 720p or juggle around with various levels of AA and texture fidelity... This website has some of the dumbest users.

The xbot doesn't like the truth? For £300 you will be buying a console that can punch with £1000 PCs.

Its too bad that you will be stuck dancing around your bedsit for the next 6 years with your s**tty kinect.

Firstly, try closer to £400 at release. Secondly, it can't "punch" with £1000 pc's. I really hope you're trolling, if not, for the love of God, please don't have children.

It has been confirmed at £300. And it can punch with £1000 pc's, as a matter of fact it will probably be producing superior graphics for a few years as it is a dedicated gaming platform, developers will be able to utilise the full potential of the hardware.
