Naughty Dog action game re-emerges, brings along some trouble

Pre-order bonuses and demo info aside, we've had very little in the way of The Last of Us gameplay details since its reveal. Thankfully, a recent gameplay demo for press has yielded fresh info on Naughty Dog's first post-Uncharted title.... read more

Looks well enough done, better than Resi, but I still don't like the addition of zombies. People can be monstrous, to me this game appeared to be looking at that side in the early stuff, now it's kind of chucked it out the window. It's like they're trying to put 2 different games in 1 box, it may end up feeling a bit disjointed, or not of course, just a concern.

Shame it's out the same year as a new GTA otherwise it could well have been my own game of the year. It'll have to make do with being a great sign-off for the PS3 and maybe even top Uncharted 2 as Naughty Dog's best game yet.
Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to stay on my toes.

uncharted 3, uncharted 2, little big planet, uncharted are my fav games this gen (in that order), and this looks like uncharted vs resident evil with stunning graphics / voice acting etc. oh yeah!

I've not seen much about 'Last of Us' but from the first minute or so of the footage I thought it would be a survivor horror stealth game. But the lack of AI (it seems) makes me think otherwise.

I was hoping it would be all about stealth, silently dispatching enemies in your way and trying not to cause too much of a ruckus otherwise you'll be swarmed in seconds. But obviously the gameplay footage shows you can be as noisy as you like with minimal consequences, it wasn't until he started shooting something that it attracted any attention.

I hope that the combat element is an optional thing and that it is possible to play the game from start to finish purely by stealth and silent kills. Obviously if things turn sour, then you can let all hell break loose on them.

... What, no head shot?

LOL at the "echolocation" plot hole to enable the use of a torch whilst "sneaking" around in the dark. The idea these abominations make noises & use echolocation completely defeats the object of them being "blind" in the first place. Like a bat, they would know another person / abomination is present based on their built-in sonar, but they wouldn't be able to differentiate between the two. If angered - they'd all fight themselves / not fight / run away.

If I were Naughty Dog - I would change it... Mushrooms can detect UV light and use it to make vitamin D. If Joel found a UV lamp, game play could be altered such that if the player (accidentally) shines the lamp on a monster - the monster runs towards the light source and attacks. On the one hand, you need the lamp to navigate in the dark - but on the other hand it could also act as a homing beacon. My 2p's worth anyway...

I must be the only person in the world (apart from Mr Duck at the top of this thread) who isn't super stoked about this game. It just looks like an awful lot of things that we've already been doing and have seen this gen (oh great, more zombies and yet another post-apocalyptic setting). I'm sure the writing will be a cut above the usual dross but now it has to contend with The Walking Dead and I highly doubt it'll reach that level while it treads quite similar ground.

But then I do seem to be a bit out of sync with this gen these days. Last year I found Far Cry 3 and Dishonoured to be fine affairs but they certainly weren't worthy of all the praise and GOTY allocations. Whereas I thought Spec Ops: The Line was truly exceptional because it genuinely broke the mould when it came to game narrative and its commentary on the complicity of the player, and yet we really didn't hear all that much about it come the end of 2012.

The very first trailer had the mutants in though Duck, ok granted it might not work out for best (who knows at this point) but I don't think it's a case of ND putting them in there in a half hearted fashion because zombies are popular at the moment.

If you've played Uncharted (particularly #3) then you know ND are more than capable of handling the human side aswell as tying in supernatural/horror elements.

Ok it's similar to Walking Dead but personally I'd like a Walking Dead game but with some actual gameplay. TLOU will scratch that itch.

This is a really interesting vid explaining the mechanics of the AI, you can also see an interview he has with creative director at the end of it, there should be a link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlIZwa-Z0Ng
The clickers use that clicking sound to see where they're going, as the fungus grows out making them blind, alot like sonar.
There is an interview over on GT with Geoff Keighly, where the creative directors explain you can play through stealthily, its alot harder to do so, needing careful planning.

Its an interesting watch for all that have just seen this gameplay

I personally cannot wait! with the survival horror genre going down the toilet over the past several years, this is looking better and better. Another Game of the year contender for ND i'm sure.

Dear Naughty Dog:

By producing sheer gaming genius through the Unchartered series, you have earned my respect and today regard you as the most talented development studio alongside Rockstar*. This game is just pure entertainment and as such, you have earned my money too.

Love You All and Keep Up the Great Work.

Yeah, this a worrying fashion in current games. Both a stealth approach and an all guns blazing approach should be balanced and preferably there should be greater rewards for approaching something stealthily and peacefully.

I'm currently trudging my way through Hitman: Absolution and I'm desperately trying to stay true to the spirit of the game and take out targets as inconspicuously as possible, but I just know that at the back of my mind that I could clear the level in a couple of minutes if I just walked in shot the target and then fought my way out using "instinct" so I could see everyone coming. I mean yeah, the game makes you feel like an absolute muppet if you do create a fracas but there's no punishment gameplay wise, unlike Blood Money where later levels would become much harder because everyone knew who you were.

I guess it's because a lot of developers these days doubt that a majority of gamers have the patience, foresight or will to employ a stealthy and peaceful approach and will boot up Blops 2 if they go more than 2 minutes without shooting something -therefore condemning their game to eBay or a pre-owned shelf- so they make the shooty, bang-bang path a lot more clear to players. The problem I've got with this is that they're probably right...
