Japan: 3DS continues to dominate charts with Animal Crossing

Another utterly unsurprising week. Don't get complacent, Nintendo - your home console is still doing worse than the PS3.

It's great to see the 3DS doing so well, but I want to see some games that push the Wii U up a bit more. Even if we end up getting a load of obscure Japanese games on Wii U I'll be happy as long as they get released here.

What is it with Animal Crossing, what am I missing?
It's quite possibly the dullest piece of crap I've ever played, yet I've got mates that are obsessed with it.
What's the secret?

I don't know how to explain it. If you don't get it, that's perfectly understandable, as it's not really a "game" as such; more a leisure activity. It's like seeing your Pokémon evolve, only it's a town and a museum and your character's clothes.

That said, I don't want to pick up New Leaf unless the NPCs stop becoming clones of each other. An alligator and a wolf should have different personalities, damn it.

The best description I've read of it was in Edge. Not a review but some other kind of feature on it. Actually I think it was in the gamecube version of the Equip: series. A retrospective. might be hard to get hold of now.

Quick precis: you've actually got to be quite mature to appreciate it oddly enough. I think it was the juxtaposition of the kiddy image and its weirdly satisfying 'pay off the mortgage' mechanic that made it so compelling. and kk. downing. blood great.

Erm... I didn't quite get those last sentences. They're giving me an image of a psychotic KK Slider downing frothy mugs of blood.

Sounds like those Tamagotchi things that were popular in the late 90's but deeper.

Ha ha! Forgot: that's not his name. I get mixed up between slider and the chap from Judas Priest.

You like fighting games - which, to me, falls into exactly the same ethos.

So, it's just a matter of taste.

But I think with Animal Crossing, it falls into something more of a pastime, it's relaxing.
