I have fond memories of so many PS2 games, countless hours playing GTA, MGS3, God of War, ZOE, Silent Hill, Dragon Quest, Marvel VS Capcom 2, Gran Turismo 3, Red Dead Revolver, Ico... Truly a wonderful machine.

I think the way Sony managed to overcome initial troubles (poor launch games, unfriendly hardware...) just like they did with the PSP or lately with the PS3 shows how dedicated they are to make a platform succeed, which might give Vita owners and potential devs some cautious optimism. The downside is that the PS2 era was also Sony at its most arrogant, thank god reasonable people like Shuhei Yoshida and Kaz Hirai took over.

Any chance they could now do proper PS2 emulation on PS3 then?

Have they stopped production so they can use the staff and resources to begin production of a PS4? That would be nice if it was available before the year is out!

It's still selling in many other places though so it's still not completely dead, but I thought Japan would be the last place to give up the PS2 ghost, considering they made it. :/ Still, with the HD PS2 games coming thick and fast, and some of them being re-released on the store at ridiculous prices, I guess there's no other choice.

The PS2 is a great retro console, I didn't realise it had that many games. Being able to play DVDs, was a mass advantage over the Dreamcast and GameCube, which just crawled along. GTA 3 and Gran Turismo 3 are legendary games, more so GTA 3, as I think that's what really started GTA. There's too many top games to list, but there was a lot of crap to average games, which is the case with all consoles. I suppose after 12 years, Sony had to call it a day. I think after the PS4 gets going, Sony will pull the plug on the PS3, so they won't keep it going like the PS2. PS3 games working on a PS4 will never happen. Sony will want to forget about PS3 and look to getting back on track, but the next console war will be the biggest in history. My money is on the Xbox 720.
