Opinion: Why I love Metal Gear Solid

Baffling, bloated and brilliant, the hide-and-sneak series defines Dave Meikleham's love for PlayStation

Wow. Where do you start? Like many people who've worked on PSM3 over the last 12 years, Hideo Kojima's wonderful, absurd, often mad and always esoteric stealth saga has defined my love of games. We've snuck behind Solid Snake every step of his journey, from giving away the incredible Metal Gear Solid 2 trailer on a VHS tape (remember those?) with PSM2's first issue, to editor Dan Dawkins being one of the first ten people in the world to complete MGS4.... read more

Opinion: Why I love Metal Gear Solid

Postby sammikid » 30 Dec 2012, 13:33

I must have owned that issue of PSM, because I remember watching that 'VHS' over & over & over again.
I've been falling in-love with the series again playing through the HD collection on the Vita, with the intent of playing through them all again before the release of GZ.
I've played them all in the past except PW (which i'm still waiting for release on the Vita) I could buy the psp version over PSN, but i'm holding out for an HD version made for Vita. Anyone know if thats happening?

I absolutely love the series. It kind of peaked for me with Metal Gear Solid even though I really enjoyed Snake Eater and MGS 4. I felt MGS 2 was a bit of a chore to play through and I had to keep convincing myself it was good because I really wanted it to be.

I still have a mint copy of MGS on PC and I keep meaning to re install it and give it a bash

My favourite video game series of all time. It somehow manages to merge all the eccentricities of Japanese video games with the high quality feel of Western video games (I'm not saying Japanese games are bad, by the way...). I've never been so invested in characters as much as I am with Solid Snake, Big Boss, Otacon etc. Some of the cutscenes are a bit overkill, but without them I don't think the series would have achieved its now legendary status.

I use to love the series but MGS4 bored me to tears, so I have up halfway through. I'm going to return to it next year and soldier on through to see the conclusion.

I'm playing MGS Peacewalker on my Vita at the mo. Defo worth a purchase, it looks great and best of all you can map the aiming to the right stick. Cracking game, cracking series. Snake Eater is probably my fave.

...and one hell of a conclusion it is. Soldier on man, one of the best titles this gen. You'll appreciate it more if you're clued up to the back story. I played the previous titles too long ago to appeciate it as much as I should have on my first play through.

It's not worth it, trust me. The ending is at least a minimum of 45 minute series of cutscenes.

The MGS series in an anime dressed up as a serious military stealth game, should've realised that by MGS2 but it seemed intelligent to me as a kid. Probably should have realised by MGS1 when Kojima didn't know what the f**k he was talking about when it came to genes.

The previous games at least had gameplay to back it up, MGS4 had barely anything.

Edit:He doesn't kill himself.<-- Could've redeemed some dignity this way but he didn't.

big fan of the series, interested to see where The Phantom Pain takes us

Wish Hideo would do a remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2,as Solid Snake VS Big Boss would be awesome on current(or next)gen consoles

Loved MGS4 and it ended nicely,so well in fact that i don't want a sequel to MGS4,its fine finishing there

Have to agree with sammykid, the second half of MGS4 is a dream for fans of the series. Amazing stuff.

Going back to Shadow Moses in 4 is right up there in the best gaming moments for me. All the old memories came rushing back, not just from the original game but what I was doing myself back in those days and how things had changed.

Snake Eater is my favourite game out the series, it had the best story to gameplay ratio and some memorable characters and set pieces. The second game is my least liked, not because of Raiden, more because I found the Big Shell a pretty dull setting. And I've started Peace Walker twice through the years but can never really get going on it, so that's the only one I've never finished.

Ground Zeroes can't come soon enough.
Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to stay on my toes.

I'd agree with that, the Big Shell was a big let down for me compared to the rich environments of Snake Eater, my fave though overall was MGS on the PSOne, truly epic gaming, the encounters with Vulcan Raven, Ninja Gray Fox and Ocelot been some of the best on console to date.

I almost agree with everything the magster says except i loved part two to the point i had every dog tag on every difficulty setting. It unlocked a web address which if spelt wrong into the url gave you a dodgy porn site:(.

MGS4's ending is one of the best game ending ever, such a masterpiece.

The first MGS was the best.
I can recall reading about it for months in Edge.
The second was too overhyped. I bought the robot flying game just for the MGS2 demo.
Which was great.
The main game not so much.
MGS3 was the 2nd best.of the series followed by MGS4.
4 was a stunning game that got slagged solely by the cut scenes.
And it shouldn't have!
Great game.
Just not as good as 1 or 3.
But pretty close.

Never seen the interest in MGS, but I never played the games when they were launched, so perhaps thats the reason why. As for MGS4, I think its one of the....actually no, it is THE most overhyped game of the entire generation. I understand that its the swan-song title to the series, or at least was meant to be, but as someone who hasnt played the others and is rating the game purely on its merits alone, I thought it was horrendously boring.
