Epic fail.

Goodbye Nintendo.

You'll be knocking on the doors of the Big Boys soon enough.

Here's an early welcome to the world of multi-platform.

Happy Christmas.

Supply constraint? I hope so but looking at the pics of waiting lines they weren't that long.

For me the problem with Nintendo is I already know what I will end up getting yet another mario another zelda remake a couple of party games and never touch the system again as the "better" or more varied games are on other systems. They have a chance again with the new system but I wouldn't be surprised if the exclusives from other publishers are only so until the next xbox and playstation comes out. They need to make more varied content themselves, they might, but they are still seen as the house of Mario and they need to be more imho.

isn't comparing handheld console launches to home system launches a little unfair?

the actual figures released were

• GBC: 155,774
• NGP: 21,471
DC: 101,490
• WS: 102,655
PS2: 630,552
• GBA: 611,504
• WSC: 145,975
• NGC: 133,719
Xbx: 123,929
• NDS: 441,485
• PSP: 166,074
360: 62,135
PS3: 88,443
Wii: 371,936
• 3DS: 371,326
• PSV: 321,407

so in fact the wii u had the third highest home console launch behind only the two most successful home consoles in the wii and ps2.

Why? Because he doesn't like the same games as you?

Well when the Wii was released over 6 years ago the world wasn't in a recession. Home consoles will suffer especially at £299.. So I think when you put it into perspective, even though it's down on the Wii... times are much much different and so too is the price tag. People 6 years ago had more money to spend on a cheap machine. As opposed to today where people have little to spend on an expensive machine. Sales will of course be lower.

I think the Wii U will only take off after quite a big price drop, but then it'd be around the same price as the DS XL which for around £180, is just a rip off. I'm 99% convinced that out of the Xbox 720 and PS4, the Xbox 720 will topple both the Wii U and PS4. Forget about power, it's a subject that is dead in the water. The Wii p**sed on the Xbox 360 and PS3, the PS2 p**sed on the Xbox and GameCube, even the PS p**sed on the Nintendo 64 (the PS was terrible for 3D graphics). But going back to the Wii U, I can see a price drop to cause a big surge in sales. But for new releases, Nintendo will do what it always does with its consoles = doesn't release much.

With the Wii U being a current gen console, it wouldn't of taken Nintendo HQ long to stick it together, most of the time and money was spent on the controller. Having the screen is a great idea, but it's the only reason why the Wii U is at an unrealistic price. Most people are happy with their current consoles, this year has been great for Xbox 360 and PS3 releases, but p**s poor for the Wii, which has been the case for years. But at the end of each year, people step off on spending and consoles is last on the list. Saying that, history has shown that past consoles have launched at the end of the year and have sold very well (selling out worldwide), so maybe it's a case of people got their hands burnt with the Wii, so they're wary. Wii U launch games could of been better and as I've said before, I just can't see Nintendo releasing much, it does make me wonder what they do down at Nintendo HQ. If I was to pick the main reason why the Wii U isn't selling as well as Nintendo wanted, I'd say it was because the Wii turned out to be a bit of a white elephant.

Great start by nintendos next gen system. I dont think it will outsell the 3ds consistently. But it will be the top selling console in japan

Yep. But the article couldn't have made it sound like Nintendo was doomed then.

Still decent sales though. Nintendo will be just fine contrary to the hopes of others. ;)

I would love Nintendo to pull the plug on their home consoles and do what Sega did and just become multi platform publisher/developer. I have bought every Nintendo console since the nes but I just cant bring myself to get a WiiU. It just all seems a little gimicky and under powered. When the next generation hits its going to be the same excuse from developers that they used with the Wii and say its too under powered to develop for. Although my opinion could change when I see the new Zelda.

Gimmicky and underpowered? Are we talking about the same system? It controls better than anything I've ever used before and I am very impressed with how seamlessly it has integrated Miiverse in the games, and how quickly and easily you can access the net on the gamepad whilst playing (I like to use a guide now and again). I can't do that on my PS3. Plus, I love being able to carry on gaming on the gamepad when my wife wants the TV (and she loves that too). Granted, these are all things you need to experience by owning the console, so that you can see them in context. Otherwise I can see why some might share your views.

That's a bit weaker than I expected. Granted Japan is a complete mess right now but still, I would have expected to it sell better than that. Maybe the price is too high for them right now?
