New wave of Nintendo Wii U commercials

Postby cult » 21 Nov 2012, 15:28

If you are the sort that is influenced by advertising and belong to a family that shouts "whoop" and 'high fives' each other, enjoy your impulse purchase.

For everyone else here is a mint to take away the taste of sick.

How exactly are adverts like that intending to woo the hardcore back to Nintendo? I know they are more for the families but this is an example of the detrimental effect they are having on the core's opinion.

Me: Hey bro, take a look at these adverts for Wii U.
Bro: (watches adverts)
Bro: .... I really hate Nintendo.

True story.

Seriously guys, Nintendo is killing me here with one cock up after the next!

I don't know of anyone whose family and friends behave in the way shown in the adverts.

I think you've answered your own question there - they're not. Scaring the hardcore away is another matter, though.

I never watch Nintendo adverts. From the bland lifestyle models of this/last generation, to the "bangin' choon" in the US Wii U advert, they're just depressing.

GNamer, for Nintendo talk.

Aye, the first statement is a prime example of something I do often, in person  . Regarding the main point of the comment - yes, I just have my brother's words and my own cringy feelings to go on, but it would appear that our fellow CVG users are equally repulsed by these adverts. We are the core, and we are not amused. I was hoping Nintendo might try something a little more old school; where they have a bitchin' montage of all of the best moments from the games in it's launch window.

It is basic business sense; appeal to the hardcore, build up the user base, then go after the fickle casual crowd. Not rely on the dwindling Nintendo loyalists, repulse the bulk of the core, and try and lure in the casuals at this early stage, especially at that price. It's hardly an impulse buy for them, is it.

The core crowd is massive now, with sales of 140 milion 360's and PS3's combined. Nintendo should be pulling out all the stops to win us over now. Not releasing stupid ads like this :(

1) Your assuming everyone who buys those systems is core

2) Your assuming some of those arent resales to the same guy. For instance. I bought 2 ps3s. Soooooo

That's true, but generally speaking, those two are known as core focused consoles. This is reflected in the services they offer as well as the type of games which dominate these systems. Plus, I was using the sales as an example of how large the core user base is now in terms of how many consoles have been purchased by them. Not as an exact indication of their numbers.

Now this is all very much my own opinion, but let's see; many people own both, not all, but lets halve that amount, then knock off 10 million for replacements, then there are the casuals, so halve it again. So 30 million core gamers? That's quite a number of us. They should be Nintendo's target for now. Sick 'em boy!

What do you think, Stealth? Do you think an old school montage would have made slightly more appealing advertising?

I'd like to know what a core gamer is FotN? I used to go bobbin for apples.
Childhood pictures redeem, clean and so serene
See myself without ruining lines
Whole days throwing sticks into streams

I have crawled so far sideways
I recognise dim traces of creation

People for whom it is a regular hobby. Those who tend to buy full games regularly. Basically the wallets which keep this industry going :)
