Neo Geo X handheld to cost £175

Postby Megatrons_Fury » 30 Oct 2012, 16:32

Has absolutely no chance of taking off.

Neo Geo games both Cart and CD based can be played on numerous emulators on other devices people already have, at 175.00 they priced themselves out of the market for all but the most hardcore of retro collectors.

Whilst im a big fan of Blaze and have practically everything they have released over the years im not even remotely interested in this.

For the same amount of money you can easily pick up a Neo Geo cd unit from japan with around 10-20 games on CD all in original packaging off of ebay from the guy's i import from. Sure the CD unit loads slowly but to have it in its superb jap packaging with pads and the games in their awesome jap cases with lovely colour manuals beats a handheld unit hands down.

At a rounded 99.99 i probably would have done an impulse purchase, for 175 i can add 15 quid and get a Vita from shopto.

Retro is my life, but at this price its just silly.

Neo Geo X handheld to cost £175

Postby brookie_2001 » 30 Oct 2012, 16:39

That is way to expensive. I'm guessing this will sell about 6 units.
I have a GP2X which could play NeoGeo games and that was half the price of this. If this was under a hundred quid then i might have been interested but i can't see why they are charging so much for it. It must have something to do with licensing or something because you can get Mega Drive, Snes handheld devices for about £30.

For not much more than that I could by a consolized MVS NeoGeo system and play every Neo-Geo game ever released.
This thing is priced about £100 too much.

Overpriced in the past, overpriced in the present.

You'd be surprised how many people will buy this, some will keep them sealed up. For that price, I'd of expected every Neo Geo game they ever made, but I suppose there's too many of them, plus they'd be a storage problem. But I never rated Neo Geo anyway, 99% of their games just seemed average to crap. When you look back at how much their games and consoles cost, it's no wonder they died at the hands of SEGA and Nintendo. I'd probably say this is up there with the price of the 3DS at launch and many other consoles.....

The Neo Geo's native res is a paltry 320 x 224, so if there isn't at least some kind of upscaling/smoothing filter in that thing, the games won't look good on a HDTV. They will look better on the handheld screen, but on the other hand Neo Geo games should be played with the arcade sticks... Anyway, some real gems among the preloaded games: Fatal Fury Special and Real Bout Special, Baseball Stars 2, Samurai Showdown 2, Kof 95, Last Resort...

its doomed before it even gets going at that price, the neogeo games might of wowed you 20 years ago but i have all those games on mame and a lot of them are looking and playing like there 20 years old, nostalgia is popular at the moment but i dont think its worth £175.

Some of those games are 20 years old, but I think that there are a couple of more or less timeless classics among those games. Baseball Stars 2 for example, which is to baseball games what Nba Jam is to basketball, is still an enjoyable alternative to the more realistic baseball games of today. Many of the fighting games also hold up pretty well, as the fighting genre still essentially follows the template laid out by SF2 two decades ago, only with added HD- and pseudo-3D polish. Of course it would be preferable that these games got upgraded into HD, like many classic movies on blu-ray, but even on the original resolution these games are still fun to play.

European distributor Blaze has already outlined plans to release additional Neo Geo games, depending on the popularity of the handheld.

So no new games unless it sells well, no-one will buy if they are not sure if more games are forthcoming, catch 22 right there. The price is also way too high.
What you need to remember is that there's what people want to hear, there's what people want to believe, there's everything else, THEN there's the truth!

Would have liked to see Viewpoint on it. But £175 is pretty steep.

I know this is really the only legal way for most people to play these games on the go (how many people will own the original ROMS?), but surely Blaze must have been aware that people use emulators.
