Beauty isn't in the eye of the beholder...

We may be coming to the end of a generation, but developers are still wringing out eye-spanking visuals from current console hardware - so much so, that we're now seeing games that would have been inconceivable five years ago. High time, then, that we gift-wrap the best-looking games of 2012 into one handy, alphabetical list. The only qualifier? They must have been released this year. Don't agree? While it isn't the most technically impressive, I would've had Borderlands 2 on that list.

Cool style, creative designs, lots of colour, you look at a screenshot and you know instantly that you're looking at Borderlands 2 which is something I don't you can say about some of those on your list CVG.

If you hadn't put the names underneath you could've argued that Far Cry was Crysis, AC3 was Red Dead and that Witcher 2 screenshot could be anything.

Halo 4, Hell Yeah! Its the best looking Halo to date, by quite some way too.

I know you have given an honourable mention to Fez, but for me, that should be in there.

Its crazy what they did with that Game, it might not be a beast, graphically but the time, dedication and effort hasnt been surpassed this year. For me anyway.

NFS Most Wanted is looking very good. NFS Hot Pursuit, Criterion's previous game, looked brilliant on the PC, so I've got high expectations for this one. I like the cityscape and atmospheric lighting in this trailer:

The Frostbite 2-powered MoH Warfighter should also look impressive on the PC, although you may have to be a fan of the gritty, gloomy look to fully appreciate it. For those that always require brighter colours, here's a more colourful jungle-level trailer:

Resident Evil 6 looks a little uneven in places, but overall the backgrounds and animations are nicely detailed and varied as they should be in a big-budget title. It has a darker look than its AAA peer Assasin's Creed 3 and isn't quite as impressive or immediately pleasing, but still looks much better than a cheaper AA title like Zombi U.

resident evil 6 can't even be called good-looking, let alone 'eye candy'. especially when it's moving. have you played the demo?? :?

Ghost Recon Future Soldier deserves a mention imo. It had loads of georgeous visual effects, not to mention some outstanding weather effects and was overall a very pretty game. Need For Speed The Run should also have got a mention for the same reasons. Lastly, Syndicate should have been on the list, again a great looking game.

Not yet. I've only watched the many trailers and gameplay demos. A lot of people have complained about the demo, but it could be an earlier or unfinished build. Some games turn out fine in the end, despite poor console demos - like Battlefield 3 last year. RE5 on the PC was the best-looking version of the game, so hopefully they'll make an effort with the RE6 port as well.

No Crysis love? Poor old CryEngine ... always the bridesmaid.

For me it was Uncharted: Golden Shower on the Vita. Not the best looking game by far of the year but a technical marvel for the handheld.

Crysis 3 is a 2013 release. If those were included, Crysis 3, GTA 5 etc. would be at the top of my list.

Of the 2012 titles, I'll add Forza Horizon for its beautiful naturalistic roadside scenery:

@ Dodo Animal Crossing looks sod all like Red Dead and both were pre 2012. If you confuse them and can't tell annual changes occurring then you're probably an Apple lover.

Not sure which I'd say is the most impressive looking game, but agree with dodo that borderlands is most distinctive.
I know we are technically discussing console console version of witcher 2, but couldn't help but mention how it has simply the most ridiculously power consuming AA implementation ever. No game should reduce an £800 graphics card to a gibbering wreck by switching on AA. Someone I know recently bought a gtx 690 and without uber sampling can get frame rates well over 80fps, but with it enabled, it drops regularly into early 30’s.
That means you looking at well over a grand to get full effect, just on graphics card alone

Rayman hells ya but ME3? Really?

Witcher 2 on PC is absolutely gorgeous and it's amazing that it still uses dx9.
Some cheerleader at school or hot secretary at the office may not think you are cool but let’s be real, those very same bitches don’t love bacon and still use IE to explore the web.
