CVG Classics: Bitmap Bros. Byte Back

Postby ZeroGeek » 14 Sep 2012, 14:58

I will be far from the only person to point this out, but on the Barbarian II artwork that's Wolf from Gladiators before he was Wolf from Gladiators :)

Isn't the woman with him 80s Page Three girl Maria Whittaker?

Yes, that IS Wolf, back when he was a cub and you're quite right, that is "Page 3 Stunna" Maria Whittaker.

I have fond memories of that poster hanging on my wall...
That's you, that is.

Yep it was Maria Whittaker and Wolf from Gladiators, it was also the cover to the game back when games used to come in cardboard boxes and usually had a poster of the cover in them as well. I remember getting the game and checking it against the page 3 poster of Maria my big brother had hanging in his cupboard just to be sure it was her.

I often wonder about the mentality of people who feel obliged to be abusive about people they have probably never met. What do they get out of it? The cachet of having slagged off a famous name in the national press? The dubious pleasure of pointing out their abusive letters to friends and sniggering over their words in newsagesnts?

I'm so glad this is all in the past. These days the gaming landscape it filled with loving fans who appreciate each others feedback as their opinions. Every gaming machine is loved by all and we all hug after a hard session on Call of Duty (again loved by all). No one is ridiculed or abused at all these days. Its a much nicer way of life. God bless all. :D

I have to disagree with Barbarian 2 being a crime against advertising, Maria Whittaker still looks great in that poster. Proper Page 3 girls back in the 80's with big hair as well as big... other things.

I still remember that move on barbarian the web of death and that little imp thing that came along the bottom of the screen
and kicked the decapitated head away. God I am an old skool gamer.

I had the poster for Barbarian 1.
Basically the same "pair" on it minus the dead demon.

I miss stuff like that with downloads and todays retail boxes.
Unless you buy a special or collectors edition boxed set these days you are lucky to even get a printed manual.
That was Wolf in Pre-Gladiator days.

Incidentally I had a flatmate years later working in a shop that he swears "Shadow" shoplifted from (Post Gladiator days).
My flatmate (a bean-pole) chased shadow through the car park where he got away in a car that was waiting for him.
I asked what he was going to do if he caught Shadow, one of the biggest Gladiators?
He looked at me and laughed saying he would have demanded the stolen jackets (leather) back.
A very brave man

I used to love Chaos Engine by Bitmap Borthers, Speedball was ok. Can anyone remember Rolling Thunder on the Spectrum? Was my favourite game back then.
