Loved this guy's artwork since I saw the first MGS game. Tried my hand at recreating it using the exact brush he uses, but to no avail. This guy is truly an artistic genius and metal gear solid would not be the same without him!

Awesome article! I've always been a HUGE fan of the MGS art style. I also in my younger days did try to emulate it but failed miserably

Nice article. Shinkawa's work is truly wonderful, I hope he'll keep working with Kojima Productions for the years to come. On top of that, I had the pleasure to meet him and he's a very nice guy to boot.

As far as the Peace Walker cutscenes go though, weren't they Ashley Wood's instead?

Yup, Ashley did the two PSP games, an artbook and a few comics.

Nice article, excellent research and insight, this site needs more of these types of article. I have started to move away from this site in recent months, but with articles like this I may well come back. Good work.

Really great article. Thanks.

One of the things that will always set Metal Gear Solid above any of its sequels was that the game design so closely matched Sjinkawa's artwork. The design in the original may have been pixelated and blocky, but I still think it far surpasses anything that followed.
