Gaikai deal to enable backwards compatibility on PS3 - repor

So then no it won't enable backwards compatibility, as our existing collections still won't be compatible. Re-releasing a game as a digital copy to purchase again on a newer device, is completely different. Otherwise you could say the Wii and 3DS are backwards compatible with the NES/SNES - which they're not.

Gaikai deal to enable backwards compatibility on PS3 - repor

As an aside, one thing I really liked about Onlive was being able to see other people play games. It was pretty interesting sitting and watching other people's play styles. I'd love it if this feature was incorporated into the next Xbox and Playstation.
And must admit, I've never heard of Gaikai. Anyone know what its like?

I've got full compatibility, because I kept my PS2. Can even buy games for £1 at cash-gen.The point is, if you want to play PS2 games that bad seek out a PS2 or find it if you kept it.

For crying out loud, I don;t care about PS1 and PS2 games... I want to play PC Games on my PS3!

It basically means the PS3 is capable of playing almost *any* console/PC exclusive game as it can simply be streamed to the console. If Sony offered that as part of a PSN+ subscription, I'd be all over it like a fat man on cake!

The report forgets you can play PS1 games on your PS3 anyway.

They could make it so you put the game disc in, it recognises the game and plays it off the server.

Not that they will. There's no money in that.

One of my PS3s already plays PS1 and PS2 discs. It also plays PC games. Yes you did read that right, one of my PlayStation 3 consoles play's PC games. Starcraft in fact.
And Digital streaming is not backwards compatibility.

I don't consider it backwards compatibility when it is being rendered externally, without your own games.

Precisely my thoughts too. This is not backwards compatibility (if this article is accurate); it is another chance for Sony and third parties to re-sell an aging library of games back to customers - many of whom may still own the actual hardcopy versions of said games. Sure, it can be a nice service (depending on pricing) for those who missed out on old games and are curious about them, and for those who did play the games and miss them, etc. but this is one of those *do*-look-a-gift-horse-in-the-mouth scenarios.

I don't get why backwards compatability isn't a given anyways. I mean, allowing you to play your owned Sony games from the past on your new Sony console, it's just good customer service. There's no "in bed with the competition" going on, it's their own f**king products! Better to just give sometimes and build love from your fans than always try to take from them to raise your share value.

That's another nice thing on PC. I have Populous the Beginning and Dungeon Keeper 2 installed right now. Why? Because I bought them and own them.

Didn't the original PS3 have backwards compatability anyways? They removed it due to "piracy" or some crap? If wrong disregard but if right, that's all kinds of wrong.

Officially they removed backwards compatibility from the PS3 to reduce manufacturing costs and not because it was being outsold month in, month out by the PS2. This is an interesting concept but won't it be in competition with the PSN stores range of lacklustre support for PS2 titles?
