Over hyped? That's a bit unfair. If I remember correctly, there wasn't that much hype at all until it came out & then, word of mouth spread how amazing it was.
This game was also out before VC & SA. On release this game was amazing. It was the first game to really pull off a 3D open world/sandbox environment. The level of freedom & things to do & discover was pretty much unheard of. It totally blew everyone away. Then years later we got VC & SA. Comparing GTA3 to the sequels is a bit pointless when you know how this industry works, how ideas evolve & how games improve steadily year by year.
