Why Final Fantasy IX was the end of a great series

One of the JRPG genres finest moments...

Final Fantasy IX is the last truly great entry in the legendary RPG series. Now, this is not to say it's the best of all - that's a separate argument the fanboys can tussle over elsewhere. However, FFIX is far superior to the last four instalments in the seemingly never-ending Final Fantasy franchise.... read more

Why Final Fantasy IX was the end of a great series

I don't care what anyone says, I loved and enjoyed Final Fantasy XII (12).
Victory is just a prelude to the next battle.

FINALLY some love for IX! It beats every other game in the series by a country mile. Not that the others aren't great too.

I completely agree, FF9 was the last great. I still think it's the best!

You're not alone there, buddy. I loved FFXII (Battle system was so enjoyable) and i thought that FFX was just a masterpiece. FFXIII was visually splendid but i felt nothing while playing it so for me XII was the end of a great series(?). :(

13 was dull, but it only got interesting around chapter 9 or so with the big open plain to explore

12 was good with the battle system but the story was pretty boring

10 was waaaaaaaaaaay too f**king religious for my liking, and i hated the game anyway, and blitzball was dogshit.."get outta my town"

I agree 100 percent. Although 7 was my favorite, 9 was the last great "Final Fantasy." While the games that followed were good games in their own right, they were not deserving of the Final Fantasy title. Send this article to Square so they could know what they are doing wrong.

As a fan of the first six games ff9 was what i actually expected 7 to be, although i did enjoy 7 & 8 the futuristic vibe of those games just didnt feel right to me, 9 brought the series back to its roots as a medieval fantasy game and i loved it for it, 10,11&12 were all good in their own ways but again they didnt feel like final fantasy, 13 on the other hand was a boring souless game with no likeable characters and while the battle system was fun and fast paced i have always prefered the slower almost turn based battles of the older games, 14 would actually be a decent mmo if it wasnt broken as hell, please square-enix go back to your roots and make 15 a fantasy game with chocobo's, moogles, airships, black, white, red and blue mages, not all of us care for amazing graphics in place of an amazing story and gameplay.

Oh btw IV is the best game in the series easily.

In my opinion IX is certainly the best however this is closely followed by X which I thought was absolutely brilliant as well, my top two favourite games ever. This obviously contradicts the article slightly, tbh I thought 12 was better than 7 and 8 as well, the only slide in quality in the series was XIII unfortunately.

FFX was amazing in my opinion! i cant decided the order i like the ones before though... ff9 > ff8 >ff7 or ff8>ff9>ff7 ill go with FF10=FF9=FF8=FF7 and FF11 was awesome if that counts :P

Couldn't agree more. 9 was the last Final Fantasy that made me smile from the word go. Ever since, FF games have been, frankly, dull. It's not that they didn't have good ideas for 10, 11 and 12, it's just they didn't really engage me and I didn't care for any of the characters.

6, 7 and 9 were fantastic. Each one of them had tons of moments which were unforgettable. 8 was ok, but I found Squall to be 1 dimensional and bland. 13 was just crap. No way will I take 20 hours to learn a battle system if the story/characters/world are boring!

I think I may well revisit 9 once the PS Vita comes out. Are 9 and 7 available to download from PS store, does anyone know?

You have so hit the mark with this topic. I miss the strategic turn based systems where there was time to plan an attack, nowadays its about mashing out a large combo and leaving the AI to deal with the other characters. I also miss all the written script from characters, since FFX came around on the ps2 they've found the disc space to have most, if not all, conversations recorded by actors. I feel this causes there to be less content and less use of my own imagineation to build character profiles. I'd like to say to square there is no need to create a radically new system every game, just stick to what works and people like.

I've only played 7, 8 and 10.

Somebody tell me what I'm missing!!!!! Is 9 available for psp? Will I like it as I found 10 to be my favourite Yojimbo kicked ass!!!! And as I had an awesome Blitzball team I enjoyed it, if I remember correctly you needed to play for Wakka's weapons and overdrives. Also I liked the fact that the abilities could be unlocked in the order you preferred.
