The secret strategy behind Sony's PlayStation 4 'no show'

Postby sammikid » 25 Feb 2013, 14:06

I thought it was pretty smart of Sony. Seize all the hype surrounding new consoles but show only as much as you have to, to justify the meeting. There was alot of absent 1st party studios and titles such as 'The last Guardian' not to mention no console!
Saving those cards for the inevitable head to head come E3

One twitter post summed it up nicely:

"They're innovating, applying the "FIRST POST!" approach to PR."

I just wanted to take a moment to praise the incredible work the CVG team has done in the past several weeks.

I know you guys get a lot of stick but I just wanted to join in on the CVG Love-in. Thanks guys, I didn't watch the PS4 Live thingy (I was quite ill and needed my beauty sleep) but I checked my RSS Feed at 6.30am for all the latest and wasn't disappointed. Great coverage, keep it up. :D

after reading this article i can say that i am completely confident that Sony will rebound from their slump in the gaming industry and with the release of the PS4 coming up they wont make the same mistake as the Wii U by bringing out a glorified box that still didn't play DVDs and still didn't meet the expectations of next gen so they are at least 2 or 3 years behind Sony and Microsoft. so now like i keep saying Microsoft your next lets see what you have to bring to the next gen table.

It's weird I used to come here just for the forum, but these days the actual site as a whole is really good. So well done, it's been a huge turn around cos to be honest the stuff on the front page used to be a bit arse. :) The reviews for the past 8 - 12 months have been much better too I reckon, and the youtube channel is also top.

Keep it up with the vids and live streams, they are class.

Yes, it's a very good site these days.

Well written blog but I remain to be convinced that this was the main motivation in not going the PS4 hardware itself

I am sure there is a communication plan hence Sony are holding much back but in terms of holding back the box to prevent MS from copying, the reality is Sony have revealed their specs in terms of CPU, GPU, RAM, PS Eye and they have been very detailed about the architecture of the PS4, i.e. x86, unified RAM etc.

There really isn't much else to reveal specs-wise which could deliver a hammer blow to MS by showing the box itself, not unless there is completely radical functionality which Sony have not revealed yet

That maybe the case but functionality is distinct from form factor, with the PC architecture Sony have they could demo functionality of PS4 on a PC, which is probably what they did when GG were playing KZ, independent of the final form factor

Aww well thanks for the lovely comments, people! We all work so hard to try and make it the best it can be.

Oh, and sorry the tease is more about current-gen stuff. It's not a Megaton.

I read in another article that it took Sony around 2 years of planning for the PS4 showcase. Laughable.

They didn't show enough of the bigger side vents, the controller that has changed a bit here and there or a few new features eh, Pach.
Here's a lockpick, now jog on.

So much prep for a console that'll launch merely a few days before the IMPENDING GAME CRASH. Shame.
