Aliens: Colonial Marines review: Or how to waste a great lic

A shooting gallery that fundamentally fails to understand what makes the Alien films so great

Aliens are like Superman. You can't make a game about them without compromising the very thing that makes them so powerful. So the Man of Steel has a health bar and can be beaten up by Sub-Zero, and xenomorphs - described by Ash in Alien as a 'perfect organism' - can be killed in droves by a single Marine with a machine-gun. In the films they're cunning, merciless, and intelligent; here they're little more than dumb animals.... read more

Aliens: Colonial Marines review: Or how to waste a great lic

I had a quick go of this on PC this morning before work.
Stock 7970 maxes the game with ease. The graphics settings are limited for PC bu the game does not look terrible, it looks ok.
Only played single player and it seems a little easy, even on the hard level. (saving ahrdest level for co-op)

The single player seemed ok to me, however it is the multi player that I bought the game for which I have not tried yet.

6.2 out of 10 seems harsh to me but I'm a fan of aliens so I would rate it higher anyway.

But in my opinion the single player seems better than the AvP marine SP.

Sounds like the multi player is good so I am happy enough. Some texture packs and some more graphics options would be nice Gearbox.

Aliens: Colonial Marines review: Or how to waste a great lic

Despite this low review score, I'm still probably gonna enjoy it. I loved the film and I've always wanted a decent Aliens Game. However 6.2 is high for a movie licensed title, so its not too bad.

Not sure about the multiplayer though. I might give it a bash at weekend and see how it is.

I'm also getting the Season pass.

Knew it. Looks great, but duff gameplay.

Will pick this up in Game for £5 in a few years.

As I say in the review, the guys who made this don't understand the film, and they're doing it a disservice. It's precisely because I'm a massive Aliens fan that I gave it a low score.

You're right about texture packs. I reviewed it on PC at max settings, and there were blurry/grubby textures all over the place. I'm not holding my breath for a patch, though.

Same as, not fussed by review scores games I have wanted have scored bad-mediocre in the press etc. but I have still bought and enjoyed those games. Hopefully my copy will arrive today (looking at you Amazon). 8)

Is that from playing the game yourself, or going by the review? 8)

It's not a beast in graphics, my stock 5850 can max it out at 40-50 f/s. It uses, well at least in the parts I've played, a lot of repetitive decor, hoping there's going to be some more variety now that I've reached the planet.

What bugs (intentioness of pun is up to you) is the way it treats the 5:4 picture ration. It doesn't crop out just left and right, but also the top and bottom, which is insane, because I can't even see the ammo indicator on my pulse rifle.

Crumbs, 3 out of 10 on Eurogamer, 3 out of 10 on Videogamer, 48% on Pc Gamer, 5 of out 10 from Edge.

I have waited 5 years for this title to arrive with numerous delays etc and I cant believe it arrived in such a poor state. Even on PC it looks like a game from 6 years ago.

Massively disapointed. Sega & Gearbox you should be ashamed of yourselves.............
