CES 2013 preview: Ultra HDTVs, bendy screens and more

Postby richomack360 » 04 Jan 2013, 13:10

Thankgod that consoles have a longer life span than TV's, phones etc

I think I am probably the only one fed up with new tech being thrown around every year - products are obsolete the moment you buy them...and I still cant tell the difference between HD and regular...got to be a limit to what the human eye can take in surely ?

I take the approach of replacing my phone every three or four years, so i notice the leap in tech - rather than the shepe that do it every year !

Depends of what techhead you are. If you're the impulse buying type then it's indeed a waste of time and money. But from a patient type perspective, it's fascinating to see all the stuff they're coming up with. Whether or not that'll power your next smartphone is irrelevant, if you're smart enough not to fall for the new version of your year-old product it still gives interesting clues as of where the tech is going and what innovation you'll really have a use for - as opposed as gimmicky stuff no one will remember five years from now.

Microsoft behind closed doors will be talking and finalising Xbox 3 specs and buying up exclusives for the console announcement in March at GDC.
E3 will be the biggest video game system launch showcase with all next gen Xbox games playable on the actual machine.

Or something like that.

Or not.

RIP Pachter.

Same Boat here. Just upgraded my LCD screen to a proper HD LED TV and can notice the difference that was only because my 6 year old LG was starting to fail. Feels like I have brand new eyes watching normal Def let alone Blu-rays and HDTV. Probably won't get another living room TV, for another 6 years, unless Hologram TV's make an earlier appearance than 2020.

I remember seeing those bendy screens two years ago, it's not new tech.

That's probably why all these pundits are masturbating over the 'death of consoles' . A seven year life-span just doesn't cut it in this here-today-gone-tomorrow-i've-barely-used-my-old-one-but-there's-a-new-one-out-now-so-must-have-that-one culture. It's all about milking the punters for what their worth with slight variations of the same old tosh.

Is this CES 2012 or 2013?

Half of that stuff was shown last year, and some even the year before.

When we're able to have one of those bendy screens the size of an A4 sheet which folds to the size of a phone, controlled with touch capabilities, then we have reached the future. We're almost there, we've got wireless internet for our touchscreen tablets and whatever, but after that there's only teleportation and tinfoil suits left to sort :P.

One would hope.

By the time 4k TVs are affordable OLED 4k screens will be coming!

Again.
You haven't been following the OLED debacle for too long have you?
Personally, I've been waiting for those screens to be released for... probably almost ten years now.
As far as I'm concerned, it's like Half Life 3 or better yet - Shenmue 3: Not gonna happen.
Although I still do wish it would because I don't give a damn about all that gimmicky stuff that was covered in the article.

Been saying it for months, people who thought PS4 would run 4K are idiots.. even PC's struggle at that, 1920x1080 will be the sweet spot of speed/performance for a long time.
