Why we get banned from games

Postby funkyjack » 03 Jan 2013, 14:12

Good article Andy sir.

In the case of IWillDominate, he's obviously a super competitive pro gamer and I can sympathise, I've let my mouth run away with me in the heat of the moment sometimes and even in the world of real life sport the competition can get ugly sometimes. It's passion, a hunger to win, it's life. And without it sport would be pretty dull. So it's definitely a difficult decision to know when to weild the ban hammer. I do think a 1 year ban is excessive though, unless he'd already been banned for shorter periods of time to no effect?

I used to admin CoD, BF and Counterstrike servers and I didn't put up with any abusive behaviour from players or even those in my own community. People who hide behind their gamertag and start attacking others personally via text or verbally are bang out of order, and I'd always give them a warning first, kick em second and if they come back and do it again, a ban would have to follow. I wouldn't ever put up with that behaviour in my house, or in my local so the same logic follows on to my game server. I think most fair minded people would have the same view.

Black Ops 2 is the worst for it.

A celebrity say iJustine for example could tweet David Vonderhar and get you banned from Black Ops 2. They can say you've been boosting even when you have not. However if I was to tweet that iJustine was boosting, nothing would happen.

Its a fair comment - act like a wally in a nightclub and expect to get escorted out. Why should that wally ruin everyone else's night out ?

Same with a wally on a server, or in a game - act like a "jerk-off" and got thrown out.

Simples, good article - although I would like to add that Halo 2 and 3 had one of the worst online communities I have experienced.

Being a player of Starcraft 2 another game which is at the centre of eSports I can say it's not a nice event when someone goes off, people have posted screen shots of the abuse sent at them which includes comments like "Hope your parents die of cancer" and such, a lot of us are competitive in such games but many of us don't get abusive. This guy got 9 warnings and has been punished several times before for consistently abusive behaviour, knowing how eSports goes he's lucky he got this far before action was taken to be honest because as SC2 player Destiny found out conduct which brings negative feedback hurts your career as sponsors are put off by it.

Everyone gets frustrated at times playing games, especially in a competitive scenario. But as with any area of professional competition, you have to be exactly that, professional. It's the same position for anyone so there's very little sympathising as he knew the risks of being unprofessional. I know people give sportsmen - particularly footballers - stick for earning vasts amounts of money but remember, there's someone else willing to pay it them so who can blame them, but these people get fined their wages just for posting something on twitter. Often something which is an opinion shared by thousands of other people.

The only time i become abusive online is when other people are behaving like idiots and/or cheating.

For example, take Forza 4 or F1 2012 or GRID. The amount of people who will use your car as a brake because they can't be bothered or cannot accept you have overtaken them is just downright infuriating, and when you release a justified tirade you are the one kicked out of the lobby, which is completely and utterly unfair.

I am a fair gamer and if someone is quicker than me or overtakes me cos made a mistake then that it is what it is and I accept it and try to get back at them fairly, but those who wanna smash you into a wall or block you or are just plain idiots, i cannot tolerate.

I accept two wrongs dont make a right, but these people get away with it time and time again, and yes you do have the option of voting them out, but you have to persuade others to do so as well.

There should be "request to warn or ban" button so that the devs can look at replay footage and see who the idiots are and first warn them, and if that doesn't succeed they get a month's ban or whatever, and you should get feedback to say that person has been warned or banned.

All i want is fair play and as I have a full time job and two kids I get limited time to play games, and hate the time I have being ruined by what is basically a cyberthug.

I can sympathise in a way. I too can get be prone to frustration. Luckily for me, I don't tend to use in-game chat often, and am quite happy to swear at my screen in the comfort of of my own self-loathing.
People who send abuse messages, harass, and generally "act like a dick" to everyone in-game, I have no sympathy for. I expect the odd bit of swearing in online games, but my friends have had countless abuse messages from keyboard warriors. Recently a friend was winning on BLOPS II, and after the game received a voice message from what could only have been a ten-year old telling him, among other lewd phrases about my friends mother, that he was going to hack his account. It's not just the kids either.
What is wrong with people?!

I had that on Battlefield Bad Company 2 on Live. I was pretty good in a tank, and I often had messages from people telling me how much of an asshole I was, because they couldn't best me. I used to write back and apologise to them for making them feel so bad that they felt the need to write abusive messages to me. Sometimes I got an apology in return but seriously **** the sore losers!

essentially suspending his career as a professional LoL player.

Seriously? That's actually considered as a valid form of employment? Okay, moving on...

I support his ban. Just because he has a "professional career" *snigger*..ahem... in LoL doesn't mean he should be given any special treatment. Players in any online game should not be subjected to insults no matter if it's anger related or intentional. He was warned 8 times after all, he should have learned to control his outbursts.
EA Sports: It's in the game(for a price).

It may seem funny but it actually is a valid and sometimes lucrative career, they don't make Football amounts of money but they support themselves well, an SC2 player called Hero made something like 130k this year alone. People in eSports are contracted to teams and sponsors so it's as valid as employment as anything else.

I cant believe people are actually sticking up for this p****. He got warned NINE times before finally being banned. The fact other players have been subjected to this a***hole for all that time alone takes the p***, and I'm sure the internet and the Lol servers are a much nicer and better place without morons like him around. How much abuse, bullying, harassment and cheating is one allowed to do before getting punished? Plenty it seems. He deserves all he got if he thinks that is acceptable behavior and should have considered the consequences of his actions especially being warned about it an extraordinary lenient amount of times beforehand. If it were up to me, I'd make sure he is never allowed near a console or computer ever again.

I only get abusive when immigrants land in my game on CoD, they wind me the f**k up with their annoying voices and language. I just wish they'd make a filter so I can play only with the English and Irish instead of Muhammed or Yanks!!
