Revealed: CVG's Best Games of 2012

Postby Solm » 19 Dec 2012, 12:18

It's nice to see such a variety of games in the above article. My favourite game is Walking Dead such a great emotional rollercoaster ride of a game. My other surprise game of this year is Hitman, picked it up not expecting much but it's such a good game.

Really good to see a variety of Games and Genres in the list.

A few of the staff have pretty much persuaded me to pick up one or two titles that I haven't got this year.

Cheers guys :D !

I can just imagine the conversations in the office...

"So what's been your favourite game of 2012? .... No sorry, Michael picked Far Cry.... Nope, John got Journey.... Christine got ZombiU... *whispers* PES 2013 hasn't been picked yet..... Excellent choice Dan, thank you."

I refuse to believe you all picked different games.

Ha! Yes, that's pretty accurate - but while I'd probably pick Far Cry 3 as my AAA console game of the year, and The Walking Dead as the most interesting, I've played PES 2013 more than just about anything. So it's an honest confluence of circumstances. Note: this isn't a dig at FIFA. It's fantastic. I just play more PES 2013.

Dishonnered is the classic "foundation right, details wrong" Much like Half Life episode 1 was to episode 2. I have a feeling the squeals(on a higher budget considering it's critical and somewhat finacial sucess) will get games of the the years galore

Walking dead a game that tells a great story simply put, it's refreshing to play anti-hero, it's refereshing to play a post apocalypse without killing every little thing that walks. and amazing characters

Even when these games aren't perfect they're still in my mind well above those of the mega-sequals we've had this year even hitman. they're all best in series but aren't different enough to stick in the mind.

No one mentioned Mass Effect 3? That was out this year right? My game of the year, good ending or bad it was a definitive end to a masterpiece trilogy. Far Cry 3 and Dishonored are close 2nd's in no particular order.

PES 2013 deserves the "award".

I have my doubts about all the stuff picking different games, but well... every person is unique :D

I'm playing Virtue's Last Reward right now, well not right now because I'm obviously typing words on here right now I can't multitask that well, and it really is rather good. The killer rabbit was a bit weird when I saw him and it started slowly but now it's getting into a good flow of story and puzzles.

Next years best game across the board can only be GTA V, shirley?

"YES!" for Hotline Miami.

Also "YES!" for Mark of the Ninja. I haven't completed it yet, but I'm playing it a bit here and there, and it's great.

I feel stealth games are having somewhat of a revival recently with Mark of the Ninja, Dishonored, Hitman. Did any other stealth games come out fairly recently?

Nice list there, mine would be;

Trials Evolution- great customisation, great value super addictive
Hitman- Brilliant graphics, truly immersive, good replay value, I lose hours and hours playing this
WRC3- easily the best racer of the year for me, a true rally sim and massively playable
Blops 2- yep after thinking it would be crap it is up there with COD4, WAW and Blops 1 in been supremely playable online, I know it will still have my time come April
Max Payne 3- gorgeous looking, well paced and gritty
Dishonoured- quite unique, great story and pleasingly dark

Other notables are FIFA 13 which just spanks most footie sims imo and Borderlands 2 which is good for a blast now and again.

My Top 5 of 2012:

1. Mass Effect 3 - conclusion to a grand scifi trilogy with interesting FemShep relationships
2. SSX - ultimately a fantastic reboot, plus awesome snowy gffx
3. Journey - one for the "games as art" supporters
4. NFS Most Wanted - the city slicker cousin of Burnout Paradise
5. Sine Mora - beautiful and innovative SHMUP action

My most played games in 2012:

1. Gran Turismo 5 Academy Edition - just heavenly on a big 3D screen
2. SSX - the need for "grabbing massive air"...
3. Modern Warfare 3 - the survival mode grind and spec ops still continue
4. NBA Jam: on Fire edition - they brought the "boom" but not the "shakalaka"
5. Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown - hopefully not the final showdown for the series
