1: Battle Royale - This is a brilliantly action-packed movie with a great and thought-provoking storyline. It's also a beautifully twisted concept, which is something I like. There isn't really much else I can say - I just love Battle Royale.

Image

2: The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - I realize that I'll be torn to bits for this, but the production values, plotline, acting and setpieces are all top-notch. I love all of the Lord of the Rings movies, but this one really is the cream of the crop and a triumph in every regard.

Image

3: Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal - Beginning its life as manga, then getting an OVA, which was then re-edited into a movie, this should have been terrible. But it isn't. It has some of the best music and animation in Japanese cinematography and a beautifully moving plotline to match.

Image

4: Red Cliff (Original Chinese version) - The Western Theatrical release is a bit lacking, but the original 2-parter is superb. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is one of the most highly-regarded works of literature ever to come out of China, and this is a brilliantly detailed and accurate adaptation. Sky-high production values, a detailed plot, epic music and special effects... what's not to like? It also contains my favourite scene ever where Zhao Yun rescues Liu Bei's son - bizarrely cut from the theatrical version.

Image

5: Doctor No - I'm a fan of James Bond, but for me the best ones are still the Connery ones. Doctor No in particular presents a more quiet, reserved Bond far removed the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig ones which are more action than spy movie. Doctor No is a memorable villain and Connery fits the role of Bond better than anyone else ever has.

Image

Special Mention: Spirited Away - Studio Ghibli are unfaulteringly brilliant at what they do, and Spirited Away is perhaps their best work. A brilliant piece of cinema in every regard.

@lordirongut - Battle Royale is pretty good but it's sequel is dreadful! And Lord of the Rings is f**king epic, no getting round it!

1. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
I consider the trilogy as one massive film, I can't watch just one leave at that. For me, this is as close to filming perfection as it comes. It has everything I want in a film which is all helped along by a nice healthy budget. It's an epic journey, beautifully told...a modern classic if there ever was one.
Image

2. Pulp Fiction
This film still feels fresh 18 years on and will go down as an all down classic in my opinion. It has a great script with an awesome, quotable dialogue and an amazing cast to back it all up. This is Tarintino's finest hour and shouldn't be missed by anyone.
Image

3. Inglourious Basterds
Another Tarintino classic. It has everything Pulp Fiction had except it is set in Nazi Occupied France in World War II. I've reviewed this recently so I won't go into it again...it just isn't quite cools as Pulp Fiction and has a far less memorable dialogue.
Image

4. Sin City
Before it was copied to death it had a completely original look and style that was very faithful to the original comic. It has a strong cast, a great story and is possibly the best looking film of all time. Oh, and Jessica Alba is a pole dancer :D
Image

5. Krull
A childhood favourite. The effects are just plain terrible, the story is cheesy and the most famous person in it is from EastEnders. But despite all that, I still watch it every time it's on...I suppose it's just one of those films stuck in my sub concious.
Image

That list would probably change all the time if I could remember film I have ever watched but as it is, these are the first 5 that popped in my head.
