Games you don't get.

Postby Funkymonk » 11 Oct 2011, 16:59

I recently purchased the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD update after seeing all the great User and Meta scores it got on Metacritic. But for me it was tedious experience - terrible controls and camera, linier level design and unimaginative puzzles. Ok the premise was great - having to look after the girl as well as yourself but apart from that...................
The GTA games are another which are considered some of the best ever but i find myself indifferent to.
So it got me thinking - what games that everyone else seems to love do you not get?

The Metal Gear Solid games, and most other Japanese-developed games. I just don't get their 'quirkiness' or humour.

I don't think you're the only one with that opinion mate. Metal Gear, despite it's massive popularity, must be one of the most divisive game series of all time. Personally, the first one remains one of my favorite games ever but by Metal Gear 4 i felt it had gone too far with it's 30 minute cut scenes and pretentious monologues. It will be interesting to see the direction the series will go now Hidio isn't working on it.

JRPGs. I do not understand the appeal of androgyny and grinding. Funnily enough, I enjoy both of those in porn...Wait, did I just say that out loud?

Seriously though, I don't get it. I don't understand why somebody would spend twenty six million hours levelling up to defeat one enemy. I suppose if that's what you enjoy, great. I just wonder who the first person was to think they would create a game that required this because they thought people would think it would be fun.

Funkymonk, I can understand your problems with Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, but you have to understand that the HD remake only exists because of nostalgia. I still place SotC in my top three games ever (God Hand and Okami are the other two, since you ask) but I can appreciate that it, and Ico in particular, must be very dated by now. I still love Ico, but it is ten years old, and the "unimaginative" puzzles were still new at the time. I'll give you that on the camera and controls, but to me hating the game because of that would be like shunning Scarlett Johansson because you didn't like the way her hair was on the first date.
Are you with me Dr. Wu
Or are you really just a shadow of the man that I once knew?
Are you crazy?
Are you high?
Are you just an ordinary guy?
Have you done all you can do?

Nostalgia's great Scotch, i'm not against retro games at all but it's important people don't let the nostalgia glasses cloud their judgement. You obviously like Ico but at least you can acknowledge the games faults and limitations. Yeah, ther's some fun to be had protecting the girl and solving the simple puzzles but ther's nothing truly outstanding about the gameplay or level design is there? It's ok but how can it get so many 10 scores from people and professional reviewers? How? That's what annoyed me because i could have bought something else like the new Batman game for example.

It's funny because after years of hearing how great the series is i decided to buy The Orange Box and i'm starting to have similar thoughts about Half Life 2. It's linier and some sections are way too long and repetitive. For example the fourth level (i think) is just one looooong, helicopter chase that starts off exciting but becomes tedius before you're half way through the level. Im not saying it's a bad game but it's certainly not the mind blowing experience it may have been in 1994.

Go ahead if you want! I was just going to say you could make this thread on the main cvg forums if you want some more replies.

For the record though since I haven't posted my one yet, I just couldn't get Civ V at all, didn't like anything about it, not the progression, the hexagonal grid or the combat. :P
