Won't that breach some kind of consumer right or industry law if they did that, surely a product has to be able to do it's intended function from out the box. If it can't play games from the go then it's like selling half the console to consumers and could get them serious trouble considering the PS2 HDD scenario and the rumours that the PS3 HDD might not be shipped straight away. Then again I hear it'll have the PS and PS2 chip set in it so it may be backward compatible from the start but if the HDD is required for that aswell they could be over stepping the line.

I think it's a master stroke to have the ps consoles backwards compatible. It means that people can still play their old ps2 games while waiting for some actual ps3 games to appear.

Mind you, I hear the 360 isn't backwards compatible, and that seems to be selling pretty well!
