Aliens: Colonial Marines review: Or how to waste a great lic

A shooting gallery that fundamentally fails to understand what makes the Alien films so great

Aliens are like Superman. You can't make a game about them without compromising the very thing that makes them so powerful. So the Man of Steel has a health bar and can be beaten up by Sub-Zero, and xenomorphs - described by Ash in Alien as a 'perfect organism' - can be killed in droves by a single Marine with a machine-gun. In the films they're cunning, merciless, and intelligent; here they're little more than dumb animals.... read more

Yep it seems you are. Gearbox could've made the best game in the world, but you'd still say it was crap. If its not AAA then its rubbish isn't it. Glad I don't listen to pointless, poorly researched, biased, badly written reviews.

sonic_uk wrote:This "review" is a joke, and quite frankly full of s***. Have you actually played the game entitled "Aliens Colonial Marines"? I think not. Maybe you've been playing the Spectrum version of "Aliens", because what you reviewed certainly isn't the game that came out today.

You don't actually see a Xenomorph in Aliens for almost an hour. In Aliens: Colonial Marines you're up to your shins in fluorescent green gore within ten minutes. This is because James Cameron understands things like pacing, storytelling, and tension - and because the devs don't.

This made me laugh but for the wrong reasons. So you're saying you'd like a game where you walk around aimlessly for an hour while absolutely nothing happens? Wow, that sounds like a great game! What an idea!

Remarkably, the soldiers are even denser than the aliens, and display about the same level of AI complexity as those man-shaped targets that move from side to side on a firing range.

Really? Because when I played it yesterday I never had that experience. The soldiers actively ducked down out of the line of fire, and attempted to flank me. The Aliens on the other hand struck from the shadows and some would retreat when under fire and lurk under the platform I was standing on, biding their time, waiting for a chance to attack.

An early level sees you stripped of your weapons and forced to crawl through a basement full of what look like bizarre Xenomorph statues.

Serouisly, what the f*** is this?!! You couldn't even get that right. Did you review this game based solely on trailers? This level happens two thirds of the way into the game, and is genuinely scary as the Alien is tries to hunt you down and takes a swipe at you every now and then through broken metal grid plates.

Crap graphics? Should've gone to Specsavers. The graphics are pretty decent. Sure, there are the occasional low res textures here and there but on the whole the game looks pretty good and crucially looks and feels like Aliens. There are some impressive lighting techniques that haven't been overdone like in so many modern releases, but are implemented in just the right way that really makes you feel as though your walking down the cold, dark, desolate corridors of an abandoned Suluco, or the wet, barren, rain soaked surface of Lv426 as a thunderstorm approaches in the distance and all of a sudden the heavens open and your camera lens is soaked with raindrops. The game also feels very smooth. I'm not sure what framerate its running at, I don't count such things, but it feels very playable and stable. As usual, no mention of any of these things though. Why am I not surprised.

No mention of the fact there's a two player local co-op option either? A welcome bonus that has become a rarity in this "online" world we live in. I'd much rather sit around the Tv with a mate laughing and talking and seeing his hilarious reactions than play online talking to a voice on a headset. I'm not surprised this wasn't mentioned though, it would be a positive thing wouldn't it? We can have that now can we.

No mention of the fact you can turn off the motion tracker so it only beeps when you're actually holding it up.

No mention of the fact that you don't have recharging health and have to collect health and armour like an old PC game of late 90's/early 00's. Infact that's what this feels like, an old Pc late 90's/early 00's Fps with modern graphics and that pleases me no end as Fps were generally better back then and more challenging, as you are more cautious, searching for that next med pack using limited resources, instead of just running blindly into a room full of enemies knowing if you crouch behind a desk for a couple of seconds you'll heal and be alright again. This game reminds me a lot of the old Aliens Vs Predator Pc Fps game from that era, and that's a very good thing.

The only negative thing I can say about the game is that there is no way to disable the auto aim, maybe this will be sorted in a future patch, although I wont hold my breath. Speaking of patches there is a day one patch I didn't bother to download as I wanted to get stuck in right away when my copy arrived yesterday. I also cant comment on the Vs Mutliplayer as I haven't played it and doubt I will tbh.

This is a terribly written and poorly researched review written by journalists who frankly should've known better. Still, thanks to crap like this joke of a review and others like it, the devs probably wont bother to continue the franchise. Why would they bother when they make a perfectly good game that gets slated for no reason? Whats the point? I hope your proud of yourselves Cvg. I guess soon the only new games we will have is Cod and Fifa, because they always get scored well regardless of the poor quality. What a rosy future that will be.

That is all.

I finished the game, played it on PC and console, and played five hours of multiplayer. What more is there to research for a review, exactly?

Correct, one of the reasons I didn't like it is because it pales in comparison to the film, but you've selectively ignored all the other reasons in the review.

I don't have a spare month to reply to all your other points, but if you like the game, fair enough. I don't.

For the sake of balance, here's all the positive reviews I've seen so far:

EGM
All Things Xbox
GamingBolt

Personally I've no idea who any of these sites are.

well i hope sonic is right, and would trust him on it as a mate also said its awesome so cant wait to play it later

and likewise i dont like to see good games get crap review scores, as alot of turd games that people buy year after year and face the same disappointment each time, get high scores.

Not sure about the multiplayer though. I might give it a bash at weekend and see how it is.

I'm also getting the Season pass.

Note that this isn't a game of a movie, it's in its own genre of SEQUAL to a movie, something I can't recall happening before. SO much more freedom than a game of a movie, where the storyling and gameplay seems relatively linear (Goldeneye is one of the only exceptions to it done fantastically).

This post makes me weep.
Some say he's half man, half fish. Others say its more of a 70/30 split. Whatever the percentage, he's one fishy bastard.

Oh I see, you are allowed to say if a game is good using your opinion and judgement, but CVG are not allowed to do the same if they come to a negative conclusion......ok, all of those review sites must be wrong then ! Or perhaps its a Weyland-Yutani mega-conspiracy to create a Xenoreviewer that can only release negative remarks ?

If Bishop was here his logic circuits would explode in a shower of irony, confusion and white liquid.
