IMAX!

Postby neilpfox » 13 Dec 2012, 14:29

My Cineworld has just chucked in its first IMAX screen, so I can see what all the fuss is about when they open it up for The Hobbit.

It's £4.50 though, on top of the £15.99 a month I pay for my unlimited card (see as many films as you like, any time).
Is it worth it? Or shall I just see The Hobbit and pay nothing?

P.S, I've yet to see the Return of the King, I finally watched Two Towers last week though. :)

You have a monthly pass at the cinema so you clearly enjoy films...... yet you haven't seen Lord of The Rings?

WHAT!?!?

It's not that I've not wanted to see it, it's just I've never got round to it. Though I plan on watching it soon, before I go and see Hobbit.

Did that not have an all day session at your local cinema? My mate went to one from 12-10 or something when they showed all 3 LoTR films back to back (not the extended versions of course) last saturday.

What is IMAX though, is it just another name for 3D ?

I've wondered that. I don't think it's 3d, they only usually do parts of films in IMAX don't they? Think bits of the last batman film was done in Imax, didn't they destroy an Imax camera?

And I echo crispy there, how the hell haven't you seen those films?

2 out of 3 ain't bad. I've just got one more to go.. :P

Yeah, I know only parts of films are filmed in IMAX, because it's very expensive. Yeah, I think Nolan broke one during the Dark Knight.

Hasn't Nolan destroyed two now?

I'm not 100% sure but I think IMAX is a higher resolution and bigger screen. My cousin goes to the Birmingham screen regularly and he says the seating is weird. Less seats in a screen so they have to bump the price up. I love films but I think the cinema is very expensive these days so I've avoided IMAX, unless Wolverhampton cineworld have a screen fitted then I doubt ill see a film in the format. One thing I do know is nobody shoots a whole film in IMAX, so when it switches from IMAX back to say 48fps (the hobbit) that could be quite jarring for the viewer and maybe annoying?

Here the cinema has a student deal every Tuesday: Ticket, medium popcorn and drink for a tenner. Used it to see the Hobbit this week. It's awesome. 8)

Also, IMAX. Next generation. IMAX. Comin' across the nation.

IMAX is actually really good. The one nearest where I live opened up only recently in time for when Skyfall was released. So far, I have seen Skyfall, The Hobbit in IMAX 3D and Les Miserables. I can safely say that the IMAX experience is worth the extra money because it provides a better viewing experience. Also, it works even better with films available in IMAX 3D, as a bigger screen means better 3D. I will say, however, that with all of the films I have seen in IMAX, the sound was defeaningly loud, especially with action movies like Skyfall.

Skyfall was screened in IMAX but it was never shot using IMAX cameras.
