Would 1 global language suit the world better?

Postby Cocacola » 20 Nov 2012, 23:02

Simple question really. Do you think the world would be a better place with 1 global language. I do. I have always like the idea of having the world all as one. Joined together.
Also, communication would improve by 100%. Don't you agree.
Anyway, people may disagree with the idea of 1 language. Oh, a couple of months ago on BBC new there was a story about the idea of 1 language. They would call it 'globish'. So anyway, what do you think. I want this to be a serious discussion so don't start going on about how your chicken nuggets ate peas and whatever.

Wasn't Esperanto created to be a global language? I think it could simplify things but I'm sure the biggest obstacle would be cultural. You could easily have one word for an egg but cultural embellishments and phrases would all have to be accommodated.

No. It'll just lead to more people asking to lend some money until they get paid a week on Friday.

And chicken nuggets don't eat peas you crazy bugger. They eat Dime Bars.
Here's a lockpick, now jog on.

There already is a global language. It's called money, and money talls.

You do not agree with my quest. I understand that, so much as it is possible to understand someone with whom I disagree so completely.

Quoted before you edit it. Moron. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be able to come up with a good pun for it.

@CocaCola Yeh obviously the world would be loads better with a global language, but we're too tribal and clinging to our past and culture makes it unlikely.

I distrust patriotism; the reasonable man can find little in these days that is worth dying for. But dying against - there's enough iniquity in Europe to carry the most urbane or decadent into battle.

I work with people from every continent on a daily basis and I never need to use anything other than English! Which is good cos most Brits (me particulalry) are s**t at languages.

Exactly, you can smuck right off if you think I'm learning cantonese, mandarin or satsuma. No I don't think it would be a good thing if everyone spoke the same language. It would erode culture and lead to so many job losses.

Yes, but I like the idea of the world being 1.

If a universal language really took off I would learn it, imagine how many more indie games would be accessible.

The universal language should be the ol' Gaeilge.

So would the borg and other swedish tennis players. I prefer the world being lots or smaller places where everywhere is unique and different. Even skegness.

But which one would be acceptable to you? Take religion, what some faiths consider acceptable practise others see as taboo. Are you going to censor all language so as to not inadvertandly cause offence ot would you say they have to ignore it and accept your imposition of language?
